Change of forum ownership?

Postby Tim on Thu Apr 16, 2009 12:25 pm

I haven't been able to speak to admin yet, but if I were able to take over the forum ownership, how many of you would back me, with policy not finance?

There's no point in attempting this if it wouldn't get majority support.

Vote now! I'll be offline for a few hours.

I would Tim, I don't want to see something this good die.

For some years we had a forum called whyguernsey.com here, it was brilliant but the site owner decided he had a better use for the holding company that was the beneficial owner of the forum and closed it on Dec 31st, he wanted a stupid amount for name, address and goodwill so a group of 5 us got together, bought identical board software, set up a site that looked comfortably similar, set up a holding company to own the forum and started whynotguernsey.com on 4th January. We lost some members as we had no form of notifying any of them not on facebook that there was a new place to go, we are picking up slowly but surely and it is a cyber home for it's members. We hope it will soon be self supporting through limited advertising

We moderate fairly heavily when necessary, that doesn't suit some folk but that's life, it is a family safe place to be and that is what we wanted, you can never please all the people all the time.

Good luck

love the typo in the header ...

before I say yes I need to know what you are going to do about making this a football forum, not a TWITTER - my concerns were stated in my earlier post elsewhere, copied below -

jimmythecuckoo wrote:
There should be a ban on all club staff and directors posting on the forum and despite success in the past it should not be used as a method of communication for official channels.

that's all very well BUT what happens if the official channel office@ doesn't get prompt / effective processing(as hitherto) . Lemmings we may be - but we do have a voice, and need to be heard. And so do, do the Director's. Quick responses posted here have in recent weeks have been a very positive & helpful contribution. We keep telling them we want more tranparency - then you pull the rug from under their feet!

Other than that, can I agree whole heartedly with the sentiment of eliminating / banning those who simply abuse the system, and see it as a forum for their own facebook or twitter! It's been very frustrating for ayone trying to read about the real footballing issues - on and off the field - in having to trudge through the nonesense (the polite word for it I believe!)

sorry I mostly disagree...
It's a small number of people posting waffle that keeps every forum alive for 90% of the time, they are the people that make it possible to have somewhere for real stories to break.
If there are no new posts for lurkers/readers to look at people drift away and the forum looks unused. I have made some great new friends through banter on here, If I'm not welcomed to come here and banter and help keep the place looking alive when there is not much action to talk about I'll just clear off now.

I don't think we should ban them neither should we stop them from posting anything on here, it's the only way for them to communicate to a vast majority of the fans, however i don't think that they should have any power over the forum

It's ok for those with time on their hands - from the timings of your contributions it appears you spend a lot of time on line whether at work or at play. For those out and about, or working long hours it is overload +++, sometimes offensive, and often like searching for a needle in a haystack!

One of the earlier contributors to Admin's thread suggested a two tier approach - effectively Footie + Social. That would work for both camps - providing the Header clearly started with an easily recognisable key word

I would have no problem with sections, key words, whatever but life in a forum is essential.

The only reason I have time on my hands at the moment is the recession, quiet at work, normally I have no time for browsing forums in work hours either. I would actually prefer to be busy with work right now.

Maybe the layout needs a bit of a revamp to make things easier to find??

take a look at the forum I am an admin on.

".....providing the Header clearly started with an easily recognisable key word..." - like putting O/T (off topic) at the start of the header? I know I do so that others who don't want to read off topic threads can avoid them.

As Maisie says you change the format of this forum and you will kill what we have got. I know of two Conference forums in the last couple of years that have been set up and had a football only policy. One has sunk without trace and the other was going in a similar direction. Dull wasn't the word for them. The first one had a new thread about once a week and people stopped visiting it. The other is populated mainly by fans of "Proper" teams and before I stopped going on it revolved around who the best fans were, who had the biggest fan base.......YAWN! But at least it was footie only.

I personally wouldn't allow people to go on holiday, cos it's so difficult for them to catch up when they come back!

It's a forum, it needs dark and light, some heated debate every now and again and some sane stuff, yes maybe it needs some organisation so that you can read what you wanna read.

Don't throw the baby out with the bath water, it's cos of the banter, the baiting, the comedy and the debate as much as the normally good moderation and general good humour that this is just about one of the most lively and vibrant footy fora goin, it doesn't need major surgery, it needs some common sense.

I wouldn't come on here if it was just serious or about footy, and I wouldn't come on here if it was just about banter, it has a balance, accept it would be my advice. Or guys and gals this could be your gilt edged opportunity to get rid of me once and for all cos I'm not interested in a stale sanitised forum.

Amen to that, personally I'd like to see more use of violence in your moderation Genghoid.
